Doubao downsizes its conversational AI teams, shifting toward commercialization and productivity businesses

PANews reported on September 23, citing LatePost, that Doubao's general Session team and its product post-training team for conversational AI have recently undergone substantial downsizing. The former is expected to be reduced by about half; some employees have been reassigned to Doubao commercialization and Feishu teams, while the rest have been laid off. Personnel from the latter have been transferred to departments including Horizon RL and Product Posttrain-Work. The report said that although Doubao's DAU has exceeded 200 million, commercialization of conversational products has encountered bottlenecks and multimodal capabilities carry high costs. ByteDance is shifting resources toward Doubao Professional Edition, Enterprise Edition, productivity use cases within Feishu, as well as e-commerce and local-services businesses. The priority of optimizing the conversational experience, including addressing “people-pleasing” issues, has declined, although the team is still improving conversational efficiency and cost-effectiveness through measures such as model consolidation.
