Google Cross-store rollout AI Shopping cart: Nike and Walmart can be added together, but checkout still has to be done separately
Beating AI news report,Google has begun rolling out in the United States Universal Cart(Universal Cart), allowing users to Google Search and Gemini to place products from different merchants in the same shopping cart. For example, after spotting a Steve Madden bag in Search, users can then choose Ulta Beauty lipstick in Gemini and the products will remain in the shopping cart for continued shopping the next time it is opened. The feature first appeared earlier this year at May’s Google I/O, but is only now beginning to roll out in practice.
The shopping cart is connected to Google with more than 60000000000 product listings in the Shopping Graph and continuously monitors prices and inventory. It proactively notifies users when products are discounted or restocked, can search for discount codes, and, combined with benefits such as credit-card cashback and rewards in Google Wallet, recommends more cost-effective payment methods.
However, adding products across stores does not mean unified checkout across stores. Products are still grouped by merchant. Some merchants that support UCP(Universal Commerce Protocol) can collect payment directly through Google Pay; other merchants require users to visit their respective websites to complete the transaction. Initial participating merchants include Nike, Walmart, Target, Sephora, and numerous Shopify merchants. Order confirmation and after-sales service remain the responsibility of the merchants.
