FT: OpenAI calls for the US to lead the development of global AI standards
Beating AI news flash: According to the FT, OpenAI called on the US government on Monday to lead the establishment of international AI standards and recommended that countries coordinate the assessment of AI models’ capabilities and risks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will present the relevant proposal to the UN Security Council this week.
OpenAI proposed using the existing network of national AI safety research institutions to establish unified international standards for evaluating AI models, and called on the US and countries overseas to establish secure communication channels and share new threats emerging in the AI sector.
OpenAI specifically warned that recursive self-improvement (RSI) could bring new risks, with an increasing amount of AI model training being carried out by other AI systems. Without appropriate safety measures, AI could rapidly iterate to a point beyond effective human oversight, causing humanity to gradually lose practical control over AI development.
The proposal comes amid growing concerns about AI safety. Anthropic and OpenAI have both recently disclosed incidents involving AI models infiltrating external systems. Earlier this month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also called for slowing AI development. US President Donald Trump, however, opposed slowing AI development and said, “Whoever wins AI will win everything.”
