Anthropic engineering manager's advice for newcomers: spend less time grinding coding problems, use more AI Turn ideas into reality

Beating Insights AI flash report: Anthropic Engineering Manager Felix Rieseberg announced that he has eliminated traditional coding interviews from hiring for his team this month. He previously contributed to the development of Claude.ai, Cowork, and Claude Code Desktop.

In the past, interviewers would ask candidates to write code live, such as completing a React coding problem, to assess their programming ability. But Claude can now do this better, and he found that the best-performing engineers on the team are not necessarily good at this type of test.

He also found that some engineers who have just entered the industry, with the help of AI, can already produce better results than senior employees. In the past, when newcomers had an idea, they often had to first write a proposal, persuade their manager, and then wait for design and development resources. Now they can directly use AI to create product prototypes and let real results speak for themselves.

There is an example within Anthropic. Company employees had long been accustomed to using Claude Code in the terminal, but recently hired engineers, Anthony Morris and Alice Zhao, set out to create a more convenient graphical interface for it. The completed the prototype in just weekend and released the first public version about 8 days later.

Rieseberg therefore advises young engineers not to focus solely on learning programming frameworks and grinding interview problems. It is more worthwhile to spend time understanding the company's business, identifying real problems, and then using AI to build solutions. He believes that AI is narrowing the technical gap between newcomers and veteran employees; experience and seniority no longer offer the same advantages as before.

However, after eliminating traditional coding interviews, he has not yet found a better assessment method himself. At present, he mainly reviews candidates' résumés and portfolios, paying particular attention to small projects that solve real problems and demonstrate product judgment.
