Moody’s:AI Financing drives private credit growth, while refinancing risks rise

BlockBeats reports that October 28, according to Reuters, Moody’s Ratings said Tuesday that large-scale borrowing to fund artificial intelligence infrastructure is driving private credit beyond the traditional corporate lending sector. However, a large volume of loans will mature over the next few years, potentially leaving weaker borrowers facing refinancing difficulties.

Specifically, demand for artificial intelligence financing has expanded from data center construction to land, power, semiconductors, graphics processing units (GPU) and tensor processing units (TPU). Moody’s expects the total capital expenditure of the five largest U.S. hyperscale cloud service providers and CoreWeave in 2027 to approach 1000000000000 USD, funded by operating cash flow, debt, and financing structures such as joint ventures and special purpose vehicles (SPV).

Moody’s warned that loans maturing in concentrated periods between 2027 and 2029 will test the ability of weaker borrowers to refinance in a higher-rate environment. Among the 607 borrowers tracked by Moody’s, approximately 17%use payment-in-kind interest (PIK), deferring cash interest payments and adding the interest to the debt, thereby further increasing their debt burden.

In addition, Moody’s highlighted the risk of “circular financing.” As mutual investment, lending, and procurement among technology companies, chip manufacturers, and artificial intelligence developers continue to increase, these interconnected risk exposures could deteriorate simultaneously if the industry enters a downturn.
