OpenAI enables nearly 2000 agents to conduct research in parallel:Agent analyzing brain cells in parallel: 32 minutes to analyze 8000000 brain cells and uncover new clues about neurological diseases
According to a Beating AI flash report, OpenAI, together with U.S.AI biotechnology company PerturbAI and the Scripps Research Institute, had 1946 agents based on GPT-Rosalind conduct Agent parallel analyses of approximately 8000000 mouse brain cells, taking only 32 minutes. The research team estimated that if scientists analyzed the data item by item and reviewed the literature, it could take months to 1 years.
The data came from earlier gene-editing experiments. Scientists disrupted different genes and observed what changes occurred in brain cells. This time,AI divided nearly 2000 sets of gene-interference results among different Agent agents, which separately analyzed cellular changes and reviewed relevant papers to identify potentially overlooked connections.
One finding involved the DCTN1 gene, whose mutations are associated with a rare disease featuring Parkinson-like symptoms.AI found that after this gene was disrupted, genes responsible for synthesizing cholesterol in brain cells became more active. Combining this with existing research, it proposed an explanation: the problem may not be insufficient cholesterol, but a defect in intracellular transport that prevents cholesterol from reaching where it is needed. If this hypothesis is verified, restoring normal cholesterol transport could become a new approach to protecting nerve cells.AI also found that the Tsc1 and Tsc2 genes, which usually jointly regulate cell growth, functioned markedly differently in the cerebellum. Disrupting Tsc2 affected dozens of genes responsible for transmitting neural signals, whereas disrupting Tsc1 caused almost no changes. This provides more specific clues for studying tuberous sclerosis, a genetic disease, but the underlying mechanisms still require validation in follow-up experiments.
