YC Supported “silent typing” glasses: claimed to transcribe more than 200 words per minute; prototype still tethered to a circuit board

Beating AI Flash,YC-incubated startup Subvocal announced that it has cumulatively raised 1300000 USD in funding and is developing a pair of “silent typing” glasses. Users need only subtly mouth words; without speaking or touching a keyboard, text can be entered into a computer. This can be used to write emails, take notes, or even give AI Agent commands. The team claims the prototype can continuously transcribe more than 200 words per minute.

The glasses use low-power radio-frequency signals to capture subtle movements of facial speech muscles, which are then decoded by a AI model. Users still need to move their mouths, but do not need to make a sound.

Similar technology has appeared before.MIT launched AlterEgo as early as 2018, which used electrodes attached to the face to recognize silent speech, but was then tested primarily with a limited vocabulary of about 20 words. Subvocal aims to further enable contactless, continuous input without vocabulary limits.

However, the product remains some distance from an actual launch. The current demonstration prototype is still tethered to an external circuit board and differs substantially from the planned glasses form factor. The claimed speed of more than 200 words per minute has also not been validated by a public independent evaluation.

Subvocal has opened preorders in the United States, with an early-bird total price of 499 USD, with a refundable 199 USD deposit paid upfront. The company expects to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2027 and still requires FCC approval.
